Telegathering: Work/Life Balance
We live in constant motion every day. From the time we rise, we are already working. We shower, brush our teeth, dress, eat, and travel to work. All of these actions are part of a routine. While they may make us feel better, they are the "to do's" rather than the "to be' s." We are all looking for balance in our lives, but how can we find it?  For many, the desire to have work/life balance stirs up anxiety and confusion.

Challenge of the Month

Take a moment to identify things that tend to disempower you. Maybe you do not like to do them, but you either have to because you make yourself, or you have to because the consequences are too great. Pick one and allow yourself to be responsible for your reactions and outcomes.  From that perspective, inquire into your actions, feelings and thoughts.  Be a scientist and discover what does not work. See what shows up from that new place.
Dear Barbara,

Thank you for all your kind wishes and notes. My ankle is healing nicely and I am on the way to recovery. I found the greatest physical therapist, Dr. Scott Rosen from Allegheny Chesepeake Physical Therapy in Regent Square.

Because the NET Groups have been so successful, we have added another monthly group in Squirrel Hill. The group will be held at Truschel Insurance, located at 1709 Murray Avenue, next to Panera Bread. Please be sure to check the calendar for announcements and changes. We are going to institute a "sign up" policy that will reward those who sign up in advance. Making and keeping commitments is a worthwhile practice. We are growing, but there is still room. Bring a "new" person and receive $5 off.

On September 17, I will be joined by my co-author and three other local authors for Meet the Authors. Please join Beth Caldwell, Mary Grace Mussenegi, Chris Posti, Bill Weil and myself for an evening of art, music, wine and books at the Third Street Gallery from 6:30 - 9:00 p.m. To register email
SDurzo@SingleStepsStrategies.com or call 412.341.0723.

Last but not least, be sure to check out the FREE teleclass on September 9th from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. This month's topic is Work/Life Balance.

Social Media Sites: Friend or Foe? You Decide!

About six months ago, a dear friend of mine encouraged me to engage with sites like Twitter, Facebook, and Linked In, also known as social media. I didn't really want to, but after giving it some thought, I decided to give it a try. I created a Facebook account, joined Twitter, completed my Linked In and Plaxo Pulse profile, started a Linked In group for Germans in Pittsburgh and created a fan page on Facebook (Phew! What a mouthful of social media jargon!). Then, while I was watching television or waiting for a meeting to start or to end, I would "tweet" (post a message on twitter), or "Facebook", or do what one does when they work the social media stuff. Within a short period of time I was able to increase my presence and have people comment on my Facebook wall. It seemed as if my visibility on the web was increasing. (As an aside, you can create an account on www.ping.fm and it will post the same message on any social media site that you select.)

How exciting! This is what I wanted! More traffic to my website and bigger turn outs for my events means the opportunity to make a bigger difference for the community. What did not work was the impact this new social media had on me personally. Whenever I would finish social mediating, I would feel restless and frustrated.

As a coach, I know that I will be most successful with changing things that don't work for me when I take full responsiblity for my reaction to any particular situation. When I am totally in the dark about why I am responding that way, I start to inquire into my actions, thoughts and feelings. So let's take a look:

Actions:
The only way I knew how to accomplish this newly added task was by multi-tasking. Most often, I would get it done while watching TV. It seemed simple enough to send a few pings, add new people on any one of my accounts and place announcements for events.

Feelings:
I do not watch a lot of TV and when I do, it is my special German detective series that requires paying attention because a) it is interesting, b) it is in German, c) I have only few of these series, and d) the beauty of this series is in its subtlety. Multi-tasking left me unsatisfied because I missed a lot of my TV series, and although it made the boring task of social media palatable, it nixed my ability to relax. It was clear I could not do both, which left me feeling restless and frustrated.

Thoughts:
Perhaps there was another way to take care of this social media business. If I really did not like doing it, did I need to force myself? I am a firm believer in marketing yourself in a way that works for people. Maybe I could experiment with finding other ways or times to complete the task. Maybe I could give myself permission to not do it at all, or hire someone to do it for me.

Conclusion:
I decided to banish the multi-tasking and to enjoy my German TV show. I also decided to hire someone to do social media work for me. Now when I do do it, it is at the end of my day, when my brain is happy to do something mindless.

What are you going to do with the things that do not work for you in your life?  Perhaps try being responsible and  inquire into what new ideas you can come up with.
